Happy Fourth of July from the counter at Sweet Mandy B’s! This weekend featuring… festive red, white and blue sprinkled, buttercream-iced sugar cookies, and an invention I have long awaited: the red velvet whoopie pie.
A whoopie pie can be an insanely delicious summer (or winter) dessert and I wholeheartedly support the red velvet (as opposed to traditional Devil’s food or chocolate) cake substitution. (Also, I am a particular fan of cold cake.) After all, red velvet is just another (more red) version of chocolate. However, the inside filling of my preferred whoopie pie is a slightly lighter and more fluffy version than Mandy B’s. Maybe it’s the need to put SMB’s signature buttercream icing on just about everything in the shop (which I strongly support), but this application was maybe just a little too sweet for my liking. I think perhaps it was the double icing installation. (See below.)
Otherwise, straight A, as always. If sweets are what you crave, Sweet Mandy B’s is where it’s at. Always providing the perfect afternoon (/evening/morning) sugar fix, it is an institution that I am always happy to find offering new treats and old standbys. And what better way to celebrate July Fourth weekend?

I find SMB to be way too sweet. I hate the grittiness in the frosting and the cakes and cookies were far too dry. Have you tried Molly’s? I’ve only had their cupcakes but they always rank higher for me.

Molly’s is awesome. Plus, they have minis at Molly’s, which is nice if you aren’t up for an entire cupcake (or if you are like me and want to try more than one flavor without feeling overly indulgent).
