Glazed and Infused

0 Comments 27 May 2012

This donut shop opened last week in the West Loop/Fulton Street corridor next to Publican Quality Meats and, somewhat ironically, Fulton Fit House (gym).

Yes, another donut shop.

I wanted to see how it measured up to Donut Vault, which no longer has the blocks-long line it once had, but still holds a place for me with its chestnut glazed and old fashioned cake donuts.

Glazed and Infused, opened and run by the family behind Isabella’s Italian restaurants scattered around town, is good. It also touts a pastry chef who has spend time at Charlie Trotter’s; another plus. But its location makes it a destination, rather than a snack-by, and I’m not sure I would go out of my way G&I.

Go for the coconut-covered cake donut. It was by far the best we tried. The plain glazed was good as well; and while red velvet looked good and I appreciate the effort in trying something different, it missed the mark for me.

Maybe if I was feeling indulgent after a PQM sandwich next door I’d stop here for a sweet treat, but I’m not sure it’s a summer must-eat. Maybe donut holes or minis would be a worthwhile option as well; just a thought.

There’s another location in Wicker Park that might do better with foot traffic.
